The English Country House takes a look at the architecture and interiors of sixty-two stunning houses in a range of architectural styles spanning seven centuries—from the medieval Stokesay Castle to the newly built, Lutyens-inspired Corfe Farm—brought to life through the world-renowned photography library of Country Life. More than four hundred color and black and white illustrations provide an insight into the architecture, decoration, gardens, and landscape settings of these houses, which are set into their architectural and historical context by the accompanying text and extended captions.

The book provides an entrée into the houses to which Country Life has had privileged access over the years, many of which are still private homes, often occupied by descendants of the families that built them. Punctuating the book at intervals in the form of booklets on rich, uncoated paper are six essays by leading British architectural historians that set the English country house into its social context and chart the changing tastes in decorating and collecting, the development of ancillary buildings, gardens and landscapes, and finally, its influence in the United States.

Corzine’s interiors reflect an elegant and sophisticated approach to life that conjures up classic Hollywood style. Her assemblages of mirrored vanities, silk-covered chaise lounges, and gold-leaf black lacquer armoires decorated with chinoiserie in gorgeous light-filled rooms are dazzling. To demonstrate the foundations of her design aesthetic, Corzine presents homes in a variety of settings—urban, rural, and coastal—as case studies. The book is divided into entryways, living and dining rooms, libraries and home offices, bedrooms and bathrooms, kitchens, and exterior areas. Sidebars cover such useful topics as choosing furniture or a textile ensemble that is appropriate for a particular style, how to incorporate mirrors to their best advantage to enliven a space, and artful ways to display treasured objects. These elegant and composed indoor and outdoor rooms are timeless.

Whether hunting for rare chandeliers, salvaging floorboards for new tabletops, or removing walls to let more light in, all the nuts and bolts of restoration are here. In Boston, a young family’s renovation takes three years and includes every modern amenity (a media room, home gym, elevator), but saves most of the original interiors (window shutters and seats, marble fireplaces). A Baltimore couple—both stars of the graphic design world—must reconcile their cutting-edge tastes with their traditional surrounds.

His trademark use of electrifying color combinations, and mixing antiques, modern furniture, and abstract paintings became the “in style” for the chic of the day, including Vidal Sassoon and Helena Rubinstein. By the ’70s, David Hicks was a brand; his company was making wallpaper, fabrics, and linens and had outposts in eight countries, including the U.S. where he worked with the young Mark Hampton, and where his wallpaper was used in the White House. “My greatest contribution as an interior designer has been to show people how to use bold color mixtures, how to use patterned carpets, how to light rooms, and how to mix old with new,’’ he stated in his 1968 work, David Hicks on Living—with Taste, the last authoritative book on his work. Written by his son Ashley Hicks, who has unprecedented access to Hicks’s archives, personal photos, journals, and scrapbooks, this is a vibrantly illustrated celebration of a half century of stunning interiors.

Retired American Professional Cyclist Lance Armstrong opens up his Austin Abode which is featured in Architectural Digest. And it looks so good. Lance who broke records when he won the Tour de France seven consecutive times lives in a warm and restful Spanish colonial-style house. Lance has a very talented and skillful team behind him to create his welcoming Texas abode, the Interiors of the house was done by Roy W. Materanek of RWM Design, Renovation Architecture by Ryan Street & Associates and Landscape Architecture by LandWest Design Group.

I just adore his contemporary living room that exudes a cheery and comfortable feeling with the use of reds and woods. The artworks and chandeliers are also very eye-catching. The spacious media/game room which displays his Jerseys from his Tour de France days and the pool cabana that looks down a walk framed by cypresses are just some of the many stunning spaces in this marvelously designed home. And I really, really love the kitchen, which displays some family photos which is quite rare in kitchens but adds a very warm touch to this already lovely room.

The master suite “was all Roy,” concedes Armstrong. “The Persian rug and Antonio Más painting from my house in Spain gave us the colors for the chairs and walls. However, when Roy put out the idea of a stainless-steel fireplace, I said, ‘I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about, but it sounds cool, so let’s go for it.’ ” The result is a stunning fireplace-cum-media center-cum-almost-mirror, “polished to the degree where you actually get a reflection,” explains Materanek. “Because the perimeter is also lit from behind, it completely softens the room.”
