Voon Wong Architects.Tregunter Road SW10
Project size: 500 square metres, 5 storey single family dwelling
Approximate budget: $3,000,000

This is the largest project completed to date by the practice with an overall construction budget of $3 million, with a complete interior rebuild behind the existing façade. The building had a typical layout for a London Victorian town house. Their remodelling emphasised the division between the front of the house (the public side) and the back of the house (the private side) with the garden at the back of the house acting as a focal point for the private rooms. This involved changing the layout and location of the principal staircase and the subsequent spaces that lead off it. This change resulted in wider well proportioned spaces that are lit by the windows along the full width of the house. Space, light and the use of beautiful and luxurious materials were the tools to create the sequence of interesting and liveable spaces.

The house was totally demolished internally and now comprises: a family room within a new extension in the basement, as well as a kitchen and formal dining room; a drawing room and study on the ground floor; a master bedroom suite on the first floor; the second floor with three additional bedrooms; the top floor containing a guest suite and the plant room. The five floors are all linked by a central staircase that is lit overhead by a skylight.

This is the third project that the practice has completed for this client, an interior designer and art collector. The client’s aim was to create a theme of restrained luxury and eclecticism. Although the scale of the project was large for the practice, the understanding of detailing and use of materials that comes from a multidisciplinary approach was very beneficial. The client along with the architect and designer were keen to explore new materials as well as rediscover traditional ones. Voon Wong and Benson Saw have an excellent network of contacts from their product design experience to draw upon.

Venetian plaster was used extensively for the accent walls to provide a beautiful surface sheen. Custom balustrades and light fittings were cast in bronze. Acrylic panels, shelving and handrails concealed LED light fittings. This combination of new materials alongside the traditional was the key to creating a sense of understated luxury in a contemporary but enduring set of spaces.

The client chose fabrics and furniture and art pieces to emphasise this theme: rugs in silk, cashmere curtains, Swarovski crystal chandeliers and upholstery fabrics in silk velvets. Furniture ranges from Mies van der Rohe day beds, Jean Michel Frank sofas, Yves Klein coffee tables alongside many custom designed pieces by the client herself and the architect.

The practice worked closely with the landscape architects del Buono Gazerwitz to create the rear garden. The south facing garden is the focal point of the rear of the house and is created so that the architectural elements of the basement extension and the external spaces are perceived as a unity. In fine weather the doors of the Family Room can be completely pushed back so that the boundary between the inside and outside is completely removed. The patio seating, water feature, planting and central lawn all contribute to the creation of an outdoor room that is a harmonious extension of the extended basement.

Voon Wong and Benson Saw are a pair of London based designers that have been working together since 2001. Their work has been featured in exhibitions in London, Milan and Singapore. The Loop lamp from 2003 was nominated for the Compasso D’Oro and is now manufactured by Fontana Arte. The ELma vases from the EL light series won the OXO Peugeot Design award. They have completed architecture and interior design projects in Shanghai, London, Hong Kong and Singapore. As well as numerous projects in London and Singapore, their current major project is the master plan of a new factory for a high quality bone china manufacturer outside Beijing. They are also cooperating with this manufacturer to design a new collection of bone china table ware to be launched later this year at an exhibition in London.

Strindberg’s experience and fascination with water and light led him to explore far and wide, and he was particularly drawn to the “the beautiful treatment of the light that you can find in the old Turkish villas climbing the slope of the Bosporus around Istanbul where they mainly let the light in from below, reflected from the water.”

Strindberg also had to address what the feeling and ambience should be based on, such as “what is a floating home, what does it stand for, does it have to look like other kinds of floating things that man uses, like boats?” “Should it even borrow details to associate to other floating vessels?” “What does it express in its design?”

Behind the Dreamliner’s interiors, designed by Seattle’s Teague, a firm with a 60-year relationship with Boeing. The Teague team strove for a design language that would convey a sense of comfort and offer subtle yet memorable cues meant to signal the Boeing brand. The idea is to help passengers recognize a Dreamliner as a Boeing jet, no matter which airline owns the plane (the planes also feature modular elements that can be customized).

Seen here is the plane’s entry, which features a soaring vaulted ceiling and a curvaceous, skylight-like overhead detail that gives a sense of space. “The idea is to welcome passengers to the airplane,” says Teague Vice-President Ken Dowd. Teague, in partnership with Boeing, focused on customer needs when developing its design strategy, using a combination of international airline surveys, personal anecdotes, and ethnographic-style research. Teague was involved from the start of the design process, which began in 2001.

The Teague team wanted to keep signature architectural details of the Dreamliner consistent throughout the plane. Seen here is a view of the cabin; visible is the continuation of the arch motif from the entryway. There is a bar-like area at the front of the coach-class section (toward the back of the plane) where passengers can stand and rest. It’s there to encourage them to move about and be both active and comfortable during the flight.

Teague also applied new material technologies to the window designs, which feature electrochromatic gel sandwiched between two pieces of glass. When electricity is flagged to the gel, the window dims or clears—meaning there is no need for cumbersome shades. The crew controls 93% of the shading action, but passengers have the final control of each window’s level of light filtering.

To keep passengers from feeling boxed in or cramped while in flight, Teague’s designers created an interior that “doesn’t look like a large tube. There’s a more room-like scale to provide a sense of comfort, as seen in this picture of an earlier mock-up of the cabin interior. The cabin also features the vaulted ceiling detail throughout, even toward the back of the plane. The cabin’s soothing lighting, provided by LED lights, can be set to mimic dusk, dawn, or daylight effects.

Teague and Boeing wanted to extend a sense of comfort to the pilot and co-pilot of the plane, too. So the Teague team designed the flight deck, seen here, to be harmonious with the sleek interior design of the rest of the plane and not just to have the generic, technical feel of most cockpits.

This is an image of the interior of the forthcoming Boeing 747-8 plane, a jumbo jet scheduled to begin flying in 2009. It features design elements that echo those found in the smaller 787 Dreamliner. Teague also worked on this plane’s interiors, and faced the challenge of carrying over elements from the Dreamliner to create a consistent brand message for other new Boeing planes. Notice the many curved lines and room-like scale, as well as the soft lighting.

The casual and contemporary interior patio pairs well with the classical nobility of the façade and interior architecture. Covered by a glass-and-steel balcony, which leads to the guestrooms, the patio’s raised boxes are lushly filled with fragrant Mediterranean plants and herbs.

Though the design concept remains consistent throughout, the original architecture of the two mansions has brought about innovative uses of space. As for interior design, principles of modernity reign rather than historicism. Carefully co-ordinated design elements, mainly using wengé wood, have been chosen for the rooms: The joinery work on the wardrobes complements the floor pattern, which is again mirrored in the wengé headboards, tables and stools placed throughout. Some guestrooms feature oversized bathrooms where large bathtubs are either sectioned off from or opened up to the main living and sleeping space via a folding wooden screen.

Preparing for its big debut in Los Angeles this fall, the WIRED Living Home is making quite a splash. We’ve written about Steve Glenn’s Living Homes prefab company before, and touted the houses’ green design innovations by renown architect Ray Kappe, but this recent collaboration with WIRED Magazine is taking prefab to a new and “high tech, low impact” level. The WIRED Living Home will combine all the green elements we love, from the reuse of building materials and a LEED® Gold rating to passive heating and cooling and solar power. Combine all that with some cutting-edge technologies, like automated theatre, temperature, and lighting, and you’ve got yourself a 4,000 square foot masterpiece of green design.

“The WIRED Home is where green plugs in. LEED® certified and designed by Ray Kappe, FAIA, the house is prefab to reduce cost and waste. Installation takes only one day. Fully automated to allow for simplicity and control, it is filled with the latest in gadgets, gear and appliances, yet still keeps kilowatt usage low. Even the car is environmentally friendly. Emitting essentially nothing but water vapor, the BMW Hydrogen 7 is the first hydrogen-powered luxury performance sedan for everyday use.”

The project is sponsored by BMW Clean Energy, and will open its doors later this year for public tours, sustainable programming, and charity-driven events. Once tickets for the showhouse go on sale, don’t pass them up- not only do you get a first-hand view of some of the best and greenest prefab out there, but a portion of all ticket sale proceeds will go to Global Green USA.
