Interior Design Program

Interior designers are experts in the art of creating mood, from a romantic supper club to a work-efficient office environment. Their canvas is space. Their tools are color, texture, fabric, and light. And their task is to create an environment where form and function merge. Interior designers know how to warm a room with ponderosa pine or cool it down with stark white. They know when paisley will perfect a look or overpower it. In short, interior designers have the ability to shape the way we feel about where we live, work, and play.

There's a science to this art. It is part psychology, part computerized drafting, part architecture. It is understanding how people respond to color, how to manage traffic flow, and how to create an atmosphere that's right for a particular space. It is knowing how to get the most out of a project budget, big or not so big. And it is working from your innate sense of artistry to create an environment that meets all the structural demands required by the industry as well as aesthetic demands on which you pride yourself as a professional. First things first - learning to become an interior designer begins with a strong foundation. We get you started with studies in drawing, perspective, proportion, color, and basic design. From there, you move on to computer-aided drafting (CAD) to plan residential and commercial space. You also learn the importance of structural safety codes and how they impact your role as an interior designer.

No matter what your personal taste, your understanding of the profession broadens with courses in the history of interior design and art of various cultures. Our experienced faculty, most of whom are practicing professionals in the field, give you the inside story on textiles, ergonomics, and lighting.

Your resume and interviewing abilities will be polished in professional development courses that give you the practical skills you need for a job search in today's employment market. And your all important portfolio - a compilation of your best work that shows your value to a prospective employer - will be ready for professional display, after preparation and practice in portfolio class. It's your way to let the outside world know just what you can do for the inside one.

Graduates of this program are prepared for entry-level positions such as assistant designer, facility and space planner, or drafts-person. With experience and the entrepreneurial spirit, you may choose to work on your own or pursue advanced positions such as senior designer or project director.
