DEPARTMENT OF INTERIOR DESIGN

The Interior Design program earned a second in the nation ranking among both private and public institutions in the 2005 America’s Best Architecture & Design Schools, published by DesignIntelligence. The success of our students and program is due in part to a multidisciplinary approach to design supported by the Interior Design program’s location with related design disciplines—architecture, industrial design, landscape architecture, planning, and visual communication design. Interior designers often manage or work in teams with architects, engineers, landscape architects, planners, and artisans. With an understanding of the comprehensive issues affecting design, graduates are prepared for leadership roles within the profession.

This collaborative environment provides a living laboratory to prepare designers for “Leading in Context,” which examines the context in which individuals and groups live and work. The professional interior designer applies knowledge of human behavior based on psychological, sociological, physiological, and emotional needs of the occupants of the space. Contextual studies identify and promote environments that sustain human health and develop professionals that are physically, socially, and culturally aware. This leadership approach is further conditioned by the belief that designers have responsibility to their communities and the public to solve problems at the global level of sustainability and at the professional level of responsibility and integrity.

The Interior Design program focuses on commercial interior design but also offers courses in residential design. Students are immersed in a learning experience that includes courses in design history; human behavior and the study of the interface of people and space as it is influenced by culture, history, and political and economic climates; design theories; and the rigor of design studio. Communication and the ability to translate the creative design process into a visual, verbal, and written language understood by others is also an important part of a student’s training as a designer. A curriculum that emphasizes aesthetics, functionality, ambient influences, and technical expertise provide students with the tools to excel in the profession of interior design.
