Chisinau-based architectural practice, Marcel Luchian Studio, have designed the M House project. The single family home can be found in Singera, in the Republic of Moldova. According to the architects: “The M House project surprises through its architecture modernism, unconventional forms and combination of materials (glass, concrete) both as regards facade and interior. “The minimalist interior design harmoniously integrates light, shadow and textures, blending them with the usefulness of natural location as well as the heating and air conditioning system used.” The luxury property in Moldova benefits from a large outdoor swimming pool and plenty of space for sun lounging and al fresco dining.

Surrounded by a maze of greenery, the Urban Cabin, a project created by the architectural studio, Suyama Peterson Deguchi in Washington, is more than a easy relaxing property. Positioned in the heart of a spectacular site, the house reflects the need of man to genuinely connect with the environment, in order to reside in harmony. The Urban Cabin was developed for a easy life. Like an escape from the crowded cities.

Surrounded by vegetation, the house (made for a couple, currently familiar with the place), is gently protected from the eyes of the neighbours, being essentially “hidden” by the luxuriant vegetation. ”Conceptually, the style was inspired by a picnic shelter in a forest. The suggestions of a primitive picnic shelter gave path to both the building’s form and minimal program requirements. All program elements have been decreased of excesses and distilled down to the elemental.”

As you step inside the residence, you observe the organic influence: an improvised tree becomes the core of the home, even though the wooden tiles adorning the walls develop a cozy (and authentic natural-like) atmosphere. In order to reflect the notion that the boundaries in between the 2 environments disappear, the tiles had been also extending to the outdoor lounge area, surrounding and providing further privacy for the inhabitants, anytime they feel like enjoying a relaxing tan session.

Russian studio Za Bor Architects has completed the third design stage of the Yandex offices in Saint Petersburg. The Russian Internet company which operates the largest search engine in Russia, wanted to see this project as an office which would complement the already existing offices of the company located in Benois Business Centre.

At the planning stage the space was developed as something in between the second office with large original objects and the first, calmer, one – there has appeared a complex architectural geometry emphasized with bright colors in places. Just like in other offices, in this office there have been created small cell zones for informal communication of 2-3 persons, which are located along the long corridor piercing the floor of the business center.

For the construction of this office there have been actively used synthetic materials of the last generation, which meet the highest ecology and fire safety demands. These are linoleum and photo wallpapers which cover the complex broken objects in the corridor, dining-room and library. The office has quite complex ceiling elements, such as white blades hanging from the walls. Although having decorative function, they also help to absorb sound along with the sound absorbing materials used in the office finishing.

Complex geometrically elements in the corridor and bright color spots help the office guests and employees get oriented in its space, which is topical considering the length of the corridor. Complex elements have been made to order via construction building method at the spot. It is interesting that in this project even multicolored lamps that can be seen under the ceiling in the corridor, have been made to order.

The two-level Tokyo office of multinational recruitment specialists CDS required reconceptualisation and renovation. Emerging Tokyo architecture practice BAKOKO developed a clearly organised plan and a design expression that reinforces some core aspects of the recruitment industry.

Spaces in which to receive and interview candidates were planned in a ‘core-and loop’ arrangement on the ground level. Staff working and meeting areas were planned with a new degree of openness on the upper level.

The stream of job candidates arriving for private interviews typically extends well into the evening, says BAKOKO. CDS wished to make a good impression on the candidates, as much as the opposite is also true. A clean, modern and stylish atmosphere was desired.

“As we worked closely with top management, assessing and mediating their diverse needs and flows through design became a central theme,” explain Kayoko Ohtsuki and Alastair Townsend of BAKOKO.

The designers established thirteen meeting rooms, some of which can be reconfigured into a 60-seat conferencing facility. They offer a variety of meeting formats and ambiences. Simple variations of colour assist with identifying the meeting rooms by their global city namesakes.

A central, rectangular ‘core’ of rooms is encircled by a black ‘racing strip’. Providing fast and efficient access to all rooms, it is expressed on the floor and ceiling and suggests a smooth ‘journey’ via its rounded corners. Says BAKOKO, it is “a loop that transports candidates along their career journey without any dead ends.”

Upstairs, the designers encouraged CDS to rethink its workspace planning philosophy. “CDS’s globally diverse workforce challenged us to create a more collaborative workspace straddling Western and Japanese office cultures,” they explain.

“As is typical in Japan, staff work long hours at their desks, but they are highly engaged amongst their specialist teams. We challenged our client to break free their old cubicle culture by creating greater transparency. The new openness fosters spontaneous communication and creates an important visual link from the desk to greenery outside.”

Various work and meeting spaces provide opportunities for interaction – for example, the central copy/meeting point, the window sofa, and the pantry area.
The feeling of openness was enhanced by the treatment of the ceiling and lighting; the existing acoustic-tile ceiling was removed, and custom-made timber light fixtures were installed. These throw light upwards and downwards, creating a diffused overhead glow and reflections off the concrete slab above.

A round meeting room for sensitive internal meetings serves a sculptural role. The use of timber is continued with an elegant frame (supporting polycarbonate wall panels) that dips and spirals over the meeting table. Communication is central to the recruitment process, and by focusing attention on the table beneath it, this delicate-looking suspended ‘canopy’ provides a powerful reminder.

Bularnia is an honest, functional office space on the ground floor of postindustrial building on the outskirts of Cracov. The goal was to introduce more natural light to dark and overpowering interior. This move redefined new proportions of space and optically enlarged narrow and low room. What’s more, light and transparent finishing materials, such as glass, delicate steel mesh and perforated boards were used to ephasize the openness of new office space.

Positioning the offices on the ground floor established strong connection with building’s exterior – on one side the office space is merged with a lush garden, on the other connects to the building’s courtyard.

Existing diagonal interior wall divides the workplace into two rooms, into which we put two additional volumes, that reorganize space and functions. Two similar rooms had their identities rebuilt and diversified. Small budget implied the simple character of the details. The interior is dominated by white and grey colours, diversified with few intense colour accents.

In these mellow spaces filled with natural light the ceiling is the strongest graphic element. In one room it is made from steel mesh, onto which we loosely put few lightbulbs. The ceiling of the latter is a composition of dark green lamps and cables.
