Sometimes you might have any problems to organize your huge DVDs/books collection, especially if you just have a small space for living. Here’s the Johan’s creative works to hack the small room to accommodate his DVDs collection which more than 1200 pieces. Johan’s using affordable pieces of IEKA LACK components is how he’s arranged certain items for aesthetic and space saving purposes. He converts his bedroom wall into shelves and the empty space under his bed, also he’s mounted a slim DVD player underneath the shelf, giving him more usable storage space. Let’s see all the photos I’m sure you’ll get some inspiration to store huge DVDs or books collection if you have lives in small home/apartments.

So, where do we start? Brands-wise, we’re looking at Castle, Infinity, Focal, and Audio Vector – all mainly European brands, but some can be found over here if you look hard enough. Everywhere you look, there’s an infusion of personal detail. From the decals on the walls to the modern lighting choices, nothing is ignored and everything seems updated to an almost exaggerated extent. Not a bad thing, really, but man – just look at that DVD collection! Let’s just hope there are no earthquakes in his area…

How did you meet the client?Well, it started with a lot of phone and email conversations some one-year ago. And in the beginning we thought; “China, naah they will just copy our ideas and feed us off with some dim-sum…” But Xiaofei kept on pushing us to meet and was a very nice guy to talk to so in the end we succeeded and meet up in Beijing. And the impression from the phone was right, both Xiaofei and his mother Mrs. Zwang are passionate and very serious about bringing Chinese cuisine to the next level. But the best part is; they are lovely and fantastic fun people to hang out with, and that is most important to us… This gonna be fun!

What was the brief from the client? The brief was pretty open, and when you enter a room for the first time, you analyze the room quickly and the first impression lasts. But they also did a fantastic project with Philippe (Starck) in 2006 with great success, so automatically you know that they want something completely different from that. But to cut it easy, they wanted something more of a concept that will stand out completely and open people’s eyes to the max, something with an edge and something that creates an experience in the room.

What was your answer / concept to the brief? And why?The answer was clear; we want to look forward and not backwards. We want to create an experience where details are everything, from the food to the tableware, from the lighting to the ambiance, from the music to the uniforms, from the chairs to the toilets. Also we feel that it is important to renew the way guests are served, we are more to a personal level where the waiter steps into character and serve with pride, instead of the classic Chinese “serving robots”. So our concept is always to have a personal chat with a staff who knows how to serve.

What is the fun part of this project? For sure that is the people behind the project, but also to work on a project with such detail and dedication from the people are really great indeed. I think we will have a long time and long distance relationship going on here, haha! Not to forget, it is nice to be the next designer after Starck they make a project with, at least for the ego

What is the challenging part of this project? And how did you solve it?The challenge has been the time, not the design. We used 3 weeks from the first meeting until presentation in Beijing, and luckily everybody loved the project. After that we used 4 VERY intensive weeks to make technical drawings of the complete project, that was a very hard nut simply caused by the complex solutions we have chosen all through the project. With an opening date of mid October (2007) we needed to move very fast.

Style Club is a hair salon. But Style Club is also NOT a hair salon – because it’s about much much more. Style Club, on boutique-and-café-strewn South William Street, is a graphic feast for the eyes. The seeming chaos of bright colours and mad patterns are courtesy of New Yorker Garry Cohn, architect at Douglas Wallace in Dublin. 'I was thinking of Alice in Wonderland as a punk rocker,' he says of his interiors. But there is method in his madness. 'It works because of the carefully placed proportions of graphics, geometrics and natural forms, meaning your eye doesn’t get lost. And then the white floor with its tiled runner grounds the whole space.'

The brief from Peter Mark CEO Barry Dempsey and Founding Director Mark Keaveney was to deliver a completely new ‘concept salon’ which would push the boundaries of design. The company was founded in 1961, 47 years ago and the Directors are aware of the fact that in the fashion arena you must define yourself by constant innovation.

A new style is born that takes Punk, Japanimation, New Wave, Memphis, Classical Design and a lot of imagination mixed with a 21st century twist. It is refreshing to see Ireland in the lime light creating a new innovative ‘Dublin’ design style.

Entering the salon feels like falling into Alice in Wonderland, where this time she is a ’punk rocker’. It’s real eye candy. Patterns clash and work at the same time. Colours collide that should never go together, and yet somehow work. Shapes and forms that don’t belong with each other are living happily side but side, it’s ingenious. Everywhere you turn is a new experience. It’s as if you are in a new space at every angle you turn.

There is a definite fashion-forward feeling in the space that is so cutting-edge it is not even on the charts yet. It’s your imagination gone wild. You have transported yourself into the centre of style and fashion and you are the show.

Whether you want to admit it or not, it is an amazing design with the highest standards of detail and finishes. There is real sophistication in the project: thing clash and work all at the same time. There an understanding of proportion and balance of color. This is not something that can be easily been achieved and the STYLE CLUB succeeds with flying colors.

Whether you like the design or not, once you walk into the STYLE CLUB you cannot help but put a smile on your face.
