The Hive Residence is a project close to the heart of Zvi Belling, head of ITN Architects. The design is a culmination of ideas developed through a series of design events and has now reached fruition and is the home of the architect.
Previously a tailor’s store in a quiet residential area of Melbourne, the structure has raised a few eyebrows by the installation of a weight bearing concrete cast of a wild style graffiti word which features as the facade of the home. The word spells out the word ‘HIVE’ and it is accompanied by a variety of arrows, swooshes and drips, all designed by local graffiti artist, ‘Prowla’, a good friend of Zvi Belling.
This is the first in a series of ‘Hip Hop’ buildings designed by ITV and the theme can be seen throughout the interior spaces. The internal geometric shapes follow the lines of the facade with unexpected slants and open spaces which allow natural illumination, while always following the theme of a hive as a home.
The ‘green’ aspect of the construction was a vital one to uphold and this has been achieved by solar heating panels on the roof, a sunken water tank under the basement parking area and a series of concealed louvred panelling which may be adjusted to aid natural cross ventilation.
