Designed by Tasos Sotiropoulos of ISV architects, this 4 storey town-house in the once industrial area of Kerameikos, may at first glance resemble the other buildings in the neighbourhood, however, its multitude of innovative features set it apart. It comes as no surprise that the residence of an eminent architect and his family would be built to the highest of standards both in terms of design and building materials.
The first unique feature we notice is the bamboo cladding over the facade of the building which faces the road. This offers both privacy to the occupants of the home as well as protection from the sun. It can be opened in sections presenting an ever changing view of the building from the road. The rear side is open and has transparencies, taking advantage of the stunning view of the Acropolis.
On approaching the entrance of the house, we are welcomed by a Zen pool which leads to a double height revolving door. Inside is a large open plan living space containing the kitchen, living room and dining room. A curving staircase leads to the upper floors on which are found an open office and hamam, bedrooms and guest rooms and finally on the top floor, which enjoys a completely uninterrupted view of the Acropolis, is the playroom and gym. An unusual feature of the home is a TV which slides between floors through a well. The industrial aspect of the area is present in the exposed ventilation pipes and the vintage metal lamps of the decor.
Everything has been designed with simplicity and functionality but above all with warmth and comfort as a family home. In other words, a Greek home.
