Show-stopper House, Singapore by Hauslab Design & Build

ver since Ben Tan moved into his house, he’s had strangers knocking on his door to find out who his designer is. The grand structure has even starred as the location for several local TV productions. This 10-year-old corner terrace sits next to a canal, a 20m buffer between his home and his next-door neighbour’s – presenting a brilliant opportunity for the homeowner, who designed his own abode as director of Hauslab Design & Build, to “open up” the place with glass. A boundary wall of angled metal slats conceals the ground floor and garden.

The space Ben loves to start and end the day in is the front patio, where he basks in the morning sun and winds down to soft music at night. The patio overlooks the garden and pool; Ben calls this area his “resort”. The rest of the home also features “talking points” such as a 3m-high glass sculpture in the airwell that doubles as a wall sconce, and a Damixa mixer tap that retracts into the bar counter. “The wow factor is really an extension of my lifestyle,” he says. “I like creating things people will talk about.”
