Westchester House by Jonathan Adler

Jonathan Adler is one of my favorite designers. His designs are always bright, colorful and happy without being over the top. House Beautiful just featured a home he designed for fashion designer Liz Lange in Westchester. He started the project off by painting the floors white, which he claims “adds instant happiness.” He then added lime green, turquoise, yellow and black accents, making it a point not to tone anything down but to let the bold colors really make a statement against all of the white.
Living Room – Black, white, and turquoise make a graphic splash in fashion designer Liz Lange’s house in Westchester County, New York. Decorator Jonathan Adler designed most of the furnishings and accessories, including the living room’s generous ottoman upholstered in Hinson’s Montauk Texture in Aegean, the Herringbone rug, and the black patent leather Regent armchair. Knoll Barcelona chairs from Design Within Reach.
Modern Dining Room – “Midcentury modernism resonates for me,” says Adler, who paired Warren Platner’s 1966 dining table from Design Within Reach with his own Chinese Chippendale chairs. The chandelier is from the 1970s. Curtains are Hinson’s Montauk Texture in Aegean, the same fabric used for the living room curtains and ottoman.
White Foyer – Adler wanted the foyer to have a clean, breezy look. Walls are painted Pocket Watch White by Ralph Lauren; the floor is marine deck paint.
Green and White Kitchen – Adler covered the kitchen’s Norman Cherner counter stools and Trans.Luxe pendant light in Alan Campbell’s Potalla in Jungle Green. For sculptural appeal, the shelves and Carrara marble countertops are amply stocked with Adler’s pottery, including his giant stoneware horse bowl and lidded Apothecary of Emotions jars. The blue and white dishes are Villeroy & Boch. Cabinets are from Ikea. Stove and dishwasher are Viking.
Sunroom – The sunroom swings with a rattan hanging chair accessorized with a flokati and a Ties needlepoint pillow designed by Adler. The McMillan screen and Meurice butler’s tray table are also from his collection.
Bright Sitting Area – Another view of the sunroom: Adler’s needlepoint Love pillow (“I believe in infantile, happy emblems”) and his green concentric-squares pillows keep company with Josef Frank’s Hawaii Brown pillows on the sofa. Arne Jacobsen Swan chair from Design Within Reach.
Breakfast Nook – Cherner chairs surround an Eero Saarinen table in the kitchen’s breakfast area.
Master Bedroom – The master bedroom’s club chairs are covered in Brunschwig & Fils Surabaya glazed chintz in Sea; Adler particularly loves “this fancy-pants Ikat fabric next to a cheap and cheerful wicker elephant — and I’ve never said no to a wicker elephant.”
Curtained Bed – In the master bedroom, the bed is draped with navy linen curtain panels suspended on Restoration Hardware’s Estate Metal curtain hardware in oil-rubbed bronze.
