verlooking the circle at the center of Mountain Brook Village; the design for Avo creates a destination dining experience. The concept sprung from the challenge to explore the contrast between the organic and machined elements. Through this paradox the restaurant achieves a consistency in use of rhythm and order, simplicity and elegance. There is no artwork on the walls; instead the large windows at each end of the space frame views to the architectural details at the rooftops across the street.
When you come into Dram, it is as if you have entered a place that is unique to Birmingham. The mystery begins with the name, and then expands out as you discover the material elements of the old barn-wood framing and rough primed-steel connections. Subtle imagery of horse racing is shown through unconventional artwork. Dram combines the comfort of a men’s grill with a more rustic feel through use of materials reclaimed from old barns in Kentucky. This third place environment delivers a casual vibe design where community happens naturally.
